Choosing the Right Umpire Protective Equipment

Having the right protective equipment is essential for baseball and softball umpires working behind home plate. A properly fitted mask, chest protector, and leg guards help protect against foul balls, wild pitches, and other impacts while allowing officials to move comfortably throughout the game.

Choosing an Umpire Mask

What About Mask Padding?

Mask padding is an important part of impact protection and comfort. Common options include traditional foam padding, moisture-wicking fabrics, and advanced impact-absorbing materials.

DRYTEK-style padding helps manage moisture and improve comfort during hot-weather games. However, moisture-wicking properties alone do not establish a mask's impact protection level.

Fit and Visibility Matter

A properly fitted umpire mask should sit securely against the protective padding without excessive movement. The frame should provide a clear view of the strike zone while offering appropriate facial protection.

When choosing a mask, consider its weight, padding, frame construction, visibility, throat coverage, and compatibility with your umpire cap.

Choosing an Umpire Chest Protector

Chest protectors are designed to help protect an umpire's chest, ribs, shoulders, and upper body from foul balls and missed pitches.

The two primary styles are hard-shell and soft-shell chest protectors.

Choosing the Right Size

Chest protectors are commonly sized according to torso length. A properly fitted protector should cover the intended chest and abdominal areas without interfering with the umpire's stance or movement.

Consider shoulder coverage, collarbone protection, lower rib coverage, adjustable straps, and overall comfort.

Which Style Is Best?

For umpires working higher-velocity baseball, a quality hard-shell protector is generally the stronger choice. Soft-shell models may be suitable for some lower-velocity assignments, depending on their protective design.

Umpire leg guards protect the knees, shins, and portions of the lower legs from foul balls, missed pitches, and other impacts behind home plate.
